Rituals and Traditions

Prathamastami, a festival dedicated to the firstborn, is primarily celebrated in the state of Odisha. This festival falls in the Hindu month of Margasira. As the name suggests, it occurs on the eighth day of Kartik Purnima. Prathamastami 2023, it is scheduled for December 5, 2023.

A customary practice on this day involves the maternal uncle presenting new clothes to the firstborn and performing a puja. Beyond its social aspects, Prathamastami contributes to enhancing family values, discipline, and fostering ideal sentiments, preparing the eldest child for familial responsibilities.

Festivals like Janmashtami, Radhashtami, and Ashokashtami are integral to Odia culture and its heritage. The people of the state celebrate these occasions with immense joy and happiness.

While Prathamastami is unique to Odisha, in other parts of India, people observe this day as Kalabhairava Ashtami. According to legends, Shri Kalabhairava is believed to liberate individuals from all their sins on this day, making it auspicious for tantric activities.
