Chhath Puja 2024 After Diwali, people eagerly wait for Chhath Puja. In Chhath Puja, a symbol of faith, Chhathi Maiya (the Mother Goddess) and Sun God are worshipped. In this, people keep a waterless fast for 36 hours. Just like Diwali (Kali puja), the date of Chhath Puja is also considered. If we talk about Chhat Puja. So it is mainly celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, but along with many other states of the country, Hindu people living abroad have also started celebrating it with great pomp. Chhat, a symbol of faith, is called a great festival. In this puja, Chhath is celebrated.
Mother and Sun God are worshiped with reverence. Chhath festival is celebrated exactly six days after Diwali and this festival lasts for four days, which starts with Yak and Kharna and then with the setting and rising Sun God. Argh is given. In this, after entering waist deep water in the river Vriti, offering Argh to the Sun God, worshiping him and then circumambulating him.
In this, a waterless fast is observed for 36 hours, which is very difficult, hence it is also called a great festival, Chhath Puja. The fast of Chhath is one of the most difficult fasts. It is believed that by worshiping Chhathi Maiya, one gets health, happiness, prosperity, happiness and blessings of children.
The Four-Day Celebration of Chhath Puja 2024
- Nahay Khay (November 5, 2024): The festival begins with the Nahay Khay ritual, where devotees cleanse themselves with holy water to purify their bodies and spirits. They prepare a simple, satvik meal, signifying the onset of the festival’s rigorous fasting routine. This day is about physical and mental preparation, helping devotees focus on spiritual mindfulness.
- Kharna (November 6, 2024): On the second day, also known as Lohanda or Kharna, devotees fast throughout the day without water and break the fast only in the evening with offerings of kheer (a sweet rice pudding) made with jaggery, rice, and milk, along with fruits and chapati. After this, they start a 36-hour waterless fast that continues until the morning of the fourth day.
- Sandhya Argh (November 7, 2024): On the third day, the main festival day, devotees gather at riverbanks or water bodies to offer prayers to the setting Sun, known as Sandhya Argh. This act of worship is marked by standing in waist-deep water and praying with offerings. The sight of hundreds of devotees at riverbanks, each holding a basket of fruits, sweets, and sugarcane, creates a serene and awe-inspiring scene.
- Usha Argh and Breaking the Fast (November 8, 2024): The fourth day begins with the Usha Argh, where devotees offer prayers to the rising Sun. This ritual signifies the end of the fast and is followed by a joyous celebration as devotees break their 36-hour fast, marking the conclusion of the Puja. Families and communities come together to share Prasad and feast on special foods prepared for the occasion.
Chhath Puja 2024 Timings and Auspicious Moments
- November 5, 2024: Nahay Khay – Sunrise at approximately 6:38 am and sunset at 5:38 pm.
- November 6, 2024: Kharna – Sunrise at 6:39 am and sunset at 5:38 pm.
- November 7, 2024: Sandhya Argh – Offering to the setting Sun at sunset, around 5:37 pm.
- November 8, 2024: Usha Argh – Offering to the rising Sun around 6:40 am. The fast can be broken after this offering.
The festival of Chhath is from Chaturthi Tithi to Saptami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. Till then it is celebrated and it starts with Nahay Khae, on the second day there is Kharna, on the third day in the evening, one stands in the river Vriti and offers offerings to the Sun God, and on the fourth day in the morning, offerings are made again to the rising Sun, to the setting sun.
Argh is offered on the Shashthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month and then Vriti Argh is offered to the rising Sun God on Saptami Tithi and along with this, after offering Argh, Chhath festival is celebrated i.e. food and water are consumed. This time, the first day of Chhath Puja 2024, which is celebrated as Nay Khay, will be on Tuesday, 5th November.
The second day will be Kharna, which is also known as Lohanda. The third day will be on Wednesday, 6th November, in which evening Argh is offered to the Sun God. 7th November will be on Thursday, the fourth day in which Usha Argh is offered i.e. Argh is offered to the rising Sun God and which is the last day of Chhath Puja, 8th November will be on Friday and this time as per Udaya Tithi it will be on 7th November.
Chhath Puja 2024 will be on Thursday only i.e. the main day of fasting will be on this day. Now know what will be the time of sunrise and sunset on all the days of Chhath Puja. So on the first day i.e. on the day of Nahay Khay, sunrise will be at 6:38 am and sunset will be at 6:38 am. Sunrise will be at 5:4 pm on the second day of Chhath Puja i.e. on the day of Kharna, sunrise will be at 6:39 am and sunset will be at 5:4 pm. On the third day of Chhath Puja i.e. on the day of fasting, sunrise will be at 6:39 am and sunset will be at 5:4 pm. Chhath Puja On the fourth day i.e. Friday, 8th November, sunrise will be at 6:4 am. On this day, the fast is broken after offering Argh to the rising Sun God.
Shashthi Tithi will start from 12:4 midnight on Wednesday, 6th November and at midnight on Thursday, 7th November. The Tithi will end at 12:34, Shashthi Tithi will remain present all day on Thursday and Saptami Tithi will start from 12:3 midnight on Thursday, 7th November, which will end on Friday night, 8th November at 11: 56. Saptami Tithi will last the whole day on Friday, 8th November.
